Explore the charms of Cap de Formentor in Mallorca, from its magnificent viewpoint over the Mediterranean and its beaches and panoramic views.
Mallorca is a unique destination full of magical spots across its landscape, but there is one place in the north of the island north that stands out for its natural beauty, stunning cliffs, and amazing sunsets: Cap de Formentor. This is a must-visit spot on your next trip to the largest of the Balearic Islands.
This corner of northern Mallorca is renowned for its breathtaking cliffs, panoramic views, and, above all, its sunsets. Prepare for an unforgettable adventure in one of the island’s essential destinations.
Capture the best shots at Mirador Cap Formentor
Our journey to Cap de Formentor begins at Mirador Cap Formentor, one of the most photographed spots on the island. Its spectacular cliffs, with their impossible rock formations, and stunning views of the Mediterranean have earned it the name "the Mallorcan Finisterre." At its northest point you will find one of the island’s most iconic lighthouses, completed in 1863 after a challenging construction process. With a 22-meter-high tower, it is the highest lighthouse in the Balearic Islands and one of the 13 still operational in Mallorca. It now runs on solar power and can be controlled remotely, so its ground floor has been converted into a café and restaurant.
During the summer months, the access road is closed to traffic from 10 AM to 10 PM, but you can reach the area by shuttle bus from Port de Pollença or Alcudia. If you choose to cycle or hike, we recommend stopping at the various viewpoints along the way to take in the different perspectives of the Mallorcan coast and capture the best shots.
Cap de Formentor beach: a peaceful oasis in the north of the island
A short distance from the viewpoint, you will find Cap de Formentor beach, a hidden gem located in one of the island’s most stunning spots. Its crystal-clear waters and fine sand make it the perfect place for a day of sun and sea. The beach has also basic services like showers and a small beach bar, making it a great option for family day trips.
The beach is surrounded by pine forests where you can protect yourself from the sun during the hottest hours, enjoy a snack, or take a pleasant Mediterranean-style siesta. If you are a sports lover, bring your snorkeling equipment and explore the wonderful underwater world of this northern Mallorcan spot.
The magic of sunset at Cap de Formentor
Undoubtedly, one of the most magical moments to visit Cap de Formentor is at sunset. Watching the sun slowly descend over the horizon as the sky changes to orange and pink is an experience you will remember forever. The spot has become very popular, which means it can get a bit crowded in the afternoon, but the natural show is hard to beat and worth the visit.
Although Mirador Cap Formentor is one of the best places to enjoy this view, you can also find a quieter spot along the cliffs. Bring a blanket and some snacks, prepare a small picnic while you wait for the day's highlight, and let the beauty of the place surprise you.
